In 2005 Herb and Dorothy Vogel made an extraordinary gift of artwork to the country by donating fifty works from their collection to fifty individual institutions across the United States. The Museum of Contemporary Art was chosen as the receiving institution in California and became part of the historic Fifty Works for Fifty States project, which includes significant works by Carl Andre, Lynda Benglis, Dan Graham, Joan Jonas, Edda Renouf, and Richard Tuttle, among others. MOCA will showcase a selection of this gift in its Grand Avenue building as a testament to the commitment of two contemporary art collectors and their wish to share their collection with the public.

Ben Jones: The Video is the West Coast solo museum debut of the artist's work. The exhibition features new videos and paintings that build upon the artist's previous work using the extracted and abstracted forms of technology and pop symbols of our time to create irreverent, surrealistic, and introspective narratives and environments, often defined by their kaleidoscopic arrays of day-glo colors. With a fluid sense of material, Jones has worked with traditional art media like painting, drawing and sculpture, but also animated music videos, produced zines and costumes, furniture and web art, cartoons and music.

Following Sunday Studio, Holly Myers and Micol Hebron present a panel discussion on the myths and realities of being an artist parent. Part of Myers’ Colloquy series, this panel brings together a diverse mix of leading Los Angeles area artists to consider such questions as: How does being a parent affect or influence your creative process? What biases have you encountered as a parent in the art world? How has being a parent changed your perspective on your art and on the role of art in culture? How do kids’ perspectives influence you, as artists?

Rick Bahto, Julia Holter, and Mark So: we're (still) living Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA presents an evening of new work by Rick Bahto, Mark So and Julia Holter. Working at the intersection of art, experimental music, and projector performance, these three artists come together for a unique event in which their distinct, yet related practices share time and space. Predicated upon dynamics that arise simply and incidentally as media combine in real time, the work shares in the pioneering spirit of composer John Cage and others, yet looks, sounds, and feels like nothing else.

Join us for a conversation and book signing with Richard Meyer and Jeffrey Deitch, moderated by Selma Holo. Contemporary art in the early twenty-first century is often discussed as though it were a radically new phenomenon unmoored from history. Yet all works of art were once contemporary to the artist and culture that produced them. In What Was Contemporary Art? Richard Meyer reclaims the contemporary from historical amnesia, exploring episodes in the study, exhibition, and reception of early twentieth-century art and visual culture. A generous selection of images, many in color—from works of fine art to museum brochures and magazine covers—support and extend Meyer’s narrative. These works were contemporary to their own moment. Now, in Meyer’s account, they become contemporary to ours as well. FREE; no reservations required
