Rolling out nationwide, adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Language Arts and Mathematics is underway in California. Designed to help launch conversations about the arts and creativity in relation to the new CCSS, this program brought together school administrators, teachers, and representatives from museums and arts organizations across Los Angeles. Here you'll find PowerPoints from the presentation as well as a three-part video documenting the event. Participants discussed:
- the nature and components of English Language Arts CCSS (see Conejo PowerPoint on the right; videos 1 and 2 below)
- the relevancy of arts pedagogy to Common Core instruction (Sampaio/Hoel PowerPoint to the right; videos 2 and 3 below)
- ways arts leadership can facilitate upcoming critical transitions, both for students and teacher collaboration (Sampaio/Hoel PowerPoint; video 3 below)
- lessons learned about creativity development and assessment from a co-piloted MOCA/LAUSD program that may help the conversation toward common educational goals (Sampaio/Hoel PowerPoint; video 3)
Featured speakers:
Debra Conejo, Literacy and Language Arts Specialist, LAUSD
Luiz Sampaio, Visual Arts Specialist, LAUSD
