Understanding Color & Tint
Time & Effort Needed
Have students experiment with color by mixing basic colors with black and white to create a series of different shades (by adding black to a color) and tints (by adding white to a color). Have them create an abstract design using as many shades of one color as possible.
Supplies You'll Need
- a variety of brushes
- one or more colors of tempera paint, plus black and white
- plastic plates (non-absorbent palettes)
- coffee stirrers
- cups with water
- paper towels
Questions for Your Students
What challenges did you encounter while experimenting with shades and tints? ...while making your design?
Taking It Further (for Art Teachers)
Challenge students to create 10-value gradients for a color, with each swatch equidistant in value from its neighbor.
