Virtual MOCA: Past, Present, & Future

Virtual

Look back and reflect on MOCA’s history, past exhibitions, initiatives, programs, and permanent collection, and see how all of these efforts relate to our present offerings and future initiatives. This series is led by MOCA's team of curators.

For this week’s program, MOCA Senior Curator and Administrative Department Head Bennett Simpson looks back at William Pope.L's monumental exhibition Trinket (2008/2015), previously on view at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in 2015. This installation consisted of a 16 x 45 foot American flag, blown non-stop by massive special-effects fans for the three-month duration of the show–until it literally came apart at the seams. Though its context five years ago, amidst the ongoing American catastrophe of policing and race, differs from today's global crisis, the work's buffeting of symbols and experience is as timely as ever. Watch Pope.L speak about Trinket in this short MOCAtv video from our archives.
