Featuring more than 130 artists working in a wide array of mediums and styles, Under the Big Black Sun addresses the dynamic period in American art when modernism, characterized by a master narrative of progress and succession, reached a dead end, and a multiplicity of movements, forms, and genres began to take shape simultaneously. The years considered bracket a tumultuous, transitional period in United States history, beginning with Richard Nixon's presidential resignation in 1974, and ending in Ronald Reagan's inauguration in 1981.

Kenneth Anger: ICONS will showcase the films, books, and artwork of one of the most original filmmakers of American cinema. A defining presence of underground art and culture and a major influence on generations of filmmakers, musicians, and artists, Anger's films evoke the power of spells or incantations, combining experimental technique with popular song, rich color, and subject matter drawn equally from personal obsession, myth, and the occult.

In 1946, the tabloid photographer known as Weegee relocated from New York City to Los Angeles. In moving west, he abandoned the grisly crime scenes for which he was best known and trained his camera instead on Hollywood stars, strippers, costume shops, and naked mannequins, sometimes distorted through trick lenses and multiple exposures. “Now I could really photograph the subjects I liked,” said Weegee of his life in Los Angeles. “I was free.” Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles is the first museum exhibition devoted to the work Weegee produced in Southern California.

For its first Engagement Party work, CamLab will transform two adjoining spaces in the museum, taking design cues from permanent collection artworks currently on view. The building’s lobby will become a radically comfortable waiting room, serving as the site for a durational Double Open Mic session centered on the theme of Empathy & Misunderstanding. CamLab will invite guests into the “Rust and Bludoir” area to experiment with mirrored embodiment in a custom-built video booth with live feedback. Visitors will oscillate between immersion and agency as they occupy the various perspectives proposed by the installation.

Punk and the D.I.Y. aesthetic were born in the late 1970s. Most scholarship on punk film and video has focused on works from New York and San Francisco, but Los Angeles also was home to a rich scene of such media. In conjunction with Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974–1981, Los Angeles Filmforum co-presents this screening as part of Alternative Projections: Experimental Film in Los Angeles, 1945-1980, which includes an amazing collection of rarely screened performances by punk bands of the era, performance art, and D.I.Y. documentary. This event is free but we ask that you kindly make a reservation, which will be honored on a first-come first-served basis.

The years considered bracket a tumultuous, transitional period in United States history, beginning with Richard Nixon's presidential resignation in 1974, and ending in Ronald Reagan's inauguration in 1981.

This course is offered in conjunction with UCLA Extension on the occasion of MOCA’s exhibitions Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981 and Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles. In this course, students will learn to use photographic tools to capture street scenes and their surroundings. They will look closely at the methods used by photographers in these exhibitions such as Weegee, Lewis Baltz, Robbert Flick, Bruce Connor, Judy Fiskin, and Bill Owens and will discuss how these artists use techniques and systems to create successful photographs. Led by instructor Janice Gomez, students will create their own photographic projects inspired by the techniques and themes of the exhibitions.

In the tradition of the teach-in, CamLab’s second work for Engagement Party will provide a fabric infrastructure for receptive bodies to listen, learn, and speak. The room-sized cloth construction will operate between garment and architecture to map distinct yet related conversation groups taking place simultaneously throughout the evening. CamLab’s recurring use of optically-charged patterns—in order to elicit the embodied eye—will make visible the movement of horizontalism and elucidating effects of proximity. FREE; no reservations

The first West Coast solo museum exhibition from Chicago-based artist and urban planner Theaster Gates, this presentation of mixed-media sculptures and installation works uses a Black non-aesthetic to explore urban blight and the potency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963, when hundreds of demonstrators were violently hazed by the county's police and fire departments.
