Contemporary Art Start (CAS) is MOCA’s yearlong classroom partnership program connecting 3rd-12th grade Los Angeles-area students and teachers to the transformative power of contemporary art. CAS combines teacher training, classroom curriculum, multiple museum visits for students, and family involvement opportunities to make a lasting impact over the course of the school year. CAS seeks to increase the presence of contemporary art in schools; nurture intellectual growth through experiences with contemporary art; and create a community of practice among educators that supports critical reflection.
Offering specialized tracks of instruction for 3rd-5th grade and secondary teachers, each year, CAS serves approximately 100 teachers and 5,000 students across Los Angeles County. Since its founding in 1986, CAS has reached over 3,000 teachers and 100,000 students in the Los Angeles area.
MOCA is now accepting applications for CAS 2018-19. Priority will be given to schools in South Los Angeles.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: April 4, 2018. Participants will be notified of program acceptance by April 20.
COST (2018-19): $110 per teacher. Schools are responsible for fall museum transportation; MOCA pays for spring transportation.
