The first West Coast solo museum exhibition from Chicago-based artist and urban planner Theaster Gates, this presentation of mixed-media sculptures and installation works uses a Black non-aesthetic to explore urban blight and the potency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963, when hundreds of demonstrators were violently hazed by the county's police and fire departments. Kenneth Anger: ICONS will showcase the films, books, and artwork of one of the most original filmmakers of American cinema. A defining presence of underground art and culture and a major influence on generations of filmmakers, musicians, and artists, Anger's films evoke the power of spells or incantations, combining experimental technique with popular song, rich color, and subject matter drawn equally from personal obsession, myth, and the occult.

Featuring more than 130 artists working in a wide array of mediums and styles, Under the Big Black Sun addresses the dynamic period in American art when modernism, characterized by a master narrative of progress and succession, reached a dead end, and a multiplicity of movements, forms, and genres began to take shape simultaneously. The years considered bracket a tumultuous, transitional period in United States history, beginning with Richard Nixon's presidential resignation in 1974, and ending in Ronald Reagan's inauguration in 1981.

In the tradition of the teach-in, CamLab’s second work for Engagement Party will provide a fabric infrastructure for receptive bodies to listen, learn, and speak. The room-sized cloth construction will operate between garment and architecture to map distinct yet related conversation groups taking place simultaneously throughout the evening. CamLab’s recurring use of optically-charged patterns—in order to elicit the embodied eye—will make visible the movement of horizontalism and elucidating effects of proximity. FREE; no reservations

Gather inspiration from the current exhibitions—the campy, demented, and glamorous style of Kenneth Anger’s films and the glitz and the distortion of Weegee’s celebrity mania photographs, with the Echo Park Film Center and artists Rick Bahto, Alee Peoples, and Cosmo Segurson. The workshop will take place on an imaginary film set, where participants will take photographs that highlight the props and costumes of the scene, catch the cast and crew at work, or alter the image using various analog photographic tricks such as glass and mirrors.. In 1946, the tabloid photographer known as Weegee relocated from New York City to Los Angeles. In moving west, he abandoned the grisly crime scenes for which he was best known and trained his camera instead on Hollywood stars, strippers, costume shops, and naked mannequins, sometimes distorted through trick lenses and multiple exposures. “Now I could really photograph the subjects I liked,” said Weegee of his life in Los Angeles. “I was free.” Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles is the first museum exhibition devoted to the work Weegee produced in Southern California.

Each year, teens take over the museum for an evening extravaganza of art, music, and more. Inspired by MOCA’s exhibition Under the Big Black Sun, the aim of DISSENT: TEEN NIGHT 2012 is to inform the youth of Los Angeles of the political and social roles of artists during a time when there seemed to be no place for speaking up against the opinions of political and institutional authority. The event features live performances and visual art by local students, artmaking, and refreshments. Have fun, hang out, and learn something new. Teen Night is an event exclusively for students in high school, hosted by teens from the MOCA Apprenticeship Program (MAP).

The event features live performances and visual art by local students, artmaking, and refreshments. Have fun, hang out, and learn something new. Teen Night is an event exclusively for students in high school, hosted by teens from the MOCA Apprenticeship Program (MAP).This year, attendees will receive a complimentary museum membership.

Since the late 1970s, Kelley has had a far-reaching influence on the Los Angeles art community, whether through his groundbreaking performances, installations, sculptures, and works on paper; his insightful critical writings; or his deep commitment to artists, as a peer and a teacher. Over the last three decades, his influence has extended to MOCA, with donations of his own works as well as those by local and international artists that have profoundly shaped the museum's permanent collection.

A defining presence of underground art and culture and a major influence on generations of filmmakers, musicians, and artists, Anger's films evoke the power of spells or incantations, combining experimental technique with popular song, rich color, and subject matter drawn equally from personal obsession, myth, and the occult.

This year’s Feminist Art Project Day of Panels organized by artists Audrey Chan and Elana Mann gauges the present and future of feminist artistic thought and practice. What are the stakes—and who are the stakeholders—of the feminist future? The day’s conversations will reflect the greater inclusivity of a contemporary feminist art that embraces a multiplicity of identities and philosophies. Topics of discussion will include: feminist art educational models, the roles of men in feminist art, interventionist art strategies, radical queer art-making, and feminism as a daily humanist practice. For the complete program, please visit: http://sharesandstakeholders.com. FREE and open to the public

In response to an economy gone to the birds, this third installment in CamLab’s Engagement Party residency will “instrumentalize” money and intention in a large-scale hands-on group gathering. Longtime “economicalists,” the members of CamLab invite you into their efficiently excessive installation for a material meditation on the distribution of resources. While occupying a cipher of fabric and song, participants will address their immediate surroundings by graphically converting cash amid the sounds of steel (oil) drumming. Join us to find your sense of re-purpose and build collectivity with conversation and contemplation, not walls with wealth. Make audible your values. CamLab will don “Feast and Famine” outfits designed by Australian artist Glenda Wyman. At the end of the evening, the duo’s Engagement Party series will conclude with a celebratory live performance by Hotel La Rut. CamLab has apportioned a part of its series' budget to W.A.G.E , Working Artists and the Greater Economy FREE; no reservations
