Join us for guided tour of MOCA Permanent Collection Masterworks 1945-1975 and learn about the relationship between life and art. Examine the ways to draw from your personal identity and narrative to make intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic proposals and statements that mimic the themes in MOCA’s permanent collection. Meet with guest artist Pearl C. Hsiung to explore the different creative processes from the exhibition, focusing on the “self” and ways to make artwork out of memoir. As in Adrian Piper’s Concrete Infinity Documentation Piece (1970), you will document, in writing, the timeline of your day in order to practice self-examination and self-awareness, keeping in mind Lee Krasner’s Primeval Resurgence (1961).

For the first of three Engagement Party Art Talks on performance and social practice, Shannon Jackson, director of the Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley, will discuss the theater and the visual art gallery as different venues of display that are simultaneously in the process of redefining each other. Surveying contemporary performance and event–based artworks, Jackson investigates how vocabularies for understanding motion and stasis, action and object, social engagement and social detachment differ depending on the inherited conventions of different sites. Moreover, she suggests that new opportunities for visual/theatrical collaboration emerge when we understand theater to be more, less, and different from the theatricality of the minimalist art gallery. FREE; no reservations

Join us for the opening of the first west coast solo museum exhibition of artist Cai Guo-Qiang and experience his site-specific work created for MOCA, Mystery Circle: Explosion Event for The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Mystery Circle, a site-specific work created for MOCA, will contain four stages of special pyrotechnics. At the moment of ignition, 40,000 firework rockets will form a string of crop circles and launch perpendicular to MOCA’s north wall, toward Temple Street, before falling onto the ground. The rockets will create a burned imprint on the museum wall, leaving an outdoor drawing. While Cai’s signature explosion events, Project for Extraterrestrials, have been dedicated to creatures from outer space, his new project at MOCA will be the first time an imaginary alien figure actually appears. The explosion event will occur on the exterior wall of the museum at 7:30pm sharp. Please present your MOCA membership card for priority entry for you and a guest. Non-members are welcome to attend.

Please join Oscar-nominated actor, writer, and artist James Franco for a discussion about his work with Francisco Ricardo, PhD., lecturer at RISD, author, and art theorist. Franco will sign copies of his newly released book at the MOCA Store after the talk. James Franco: The Dangerous Book Four Boys explores themes of childhood, nostalgia, games, and destruction in multiple media including sculpture, video, photography, and drawing. Each experimental film, suite of drawings, and raw, childlike construction is presented as a window into the artist’s mind. This dense and often diaristic survey reflects Franco’s interest in the contemporary American landscape of male adolescence, young adulthood, sexuality, and the nature of masculinity itself. Please note: Franco will only sign copies of The Dangerous Book Four Boys purchased from the MOCA Store (proof of purchase required) on a first-come first-served basis. Due to high demand, early arrival is recommended. The signing will end promptly at 5pm. For the second Engagement Party Art Talk, MOCA has invited The Public School to present two discussions about isolation, monitoring and habitability against a backdrop of dissolving social institutions, familial structures, employment, and more. James Merle Thomas will present Tektite Revisited—his research into NASA’s short-lived program—covering aquanauts, anechoic chambers, and the problems of modern living. Benjamin Bratton will speak about the “cloud” and planetary scale computation, with its effects on territory, law, and place. A discussion moderated by Sean Dockray will follow. James Merle Thomas is a current Guggenheim Fellow at the National Air and Space Museum and Benjamin Bratton is the Director of UC San Diego’s Center for Design and Geopolitics; both have been instructors for The Public School. Sean Dockray is the co-founder of The Public School, Los Angeles. FREE; no reservations
